The Beginning of A Wise Career Move
When Ashton was founded in 1985 by Robert G. Levin, they were the first premium cigars in the American market. Robert Levin had zero designs on getting into the cigar business. In fact, as a young man Robert pursued a career in communications and media and. But that didn’t last long.
Robert Levin’s dad, a former clothing manufacturer and a lifelong pipe and cigar fan, took his own business aplomb and purchased a local Philadelphia cigar store, Holt’s Cigar Company, in 1957. The younger Levin, who was about 11 years old when his dad bought the store, used to help out after school and on Saturdays. He literally grew up in the cigar business.
Although Robert had no intention of joining the family business, he soon reconsidered. About 1973 the elder Levin began having health problems and needed to take some time off. He asked his son to help out and Robert soon learned to love the business. Robert would open the shop each morning to find a line of patrons waiting to get in to purchase their cigars.
Although the senior Levin was familiar with more premium cigars, his demographic were mostly unfamiliar with the slightly higher-end smokes. The Levins sold all kinds of cigars and tobacco products but in the early 1960s began specializing in “seconds” such as Garcia y Vega seconds and A&C seconds. The senior Levin purchased huge quantities of these cigars directly from the factories. Eventually Holt’s Cigar Company relocated to a bigger retail establishment and Robert’s dad had the very first walk-in humidor in the area.
An American Premium Cigar
In those early days machine made cigars were mass-marketed and the preferred (and basically, only known) smoke of the working men in and around Philly. The Cigar Boom was a few years off and the mass marketed stogies fit the bill at the time. As cigar popularity grew these mass-produced cigars were available in grocery stores, convenience stores, newsstands and drugstores. It was Robert who came up with the idea to concentrate more on hand-made cigars.
In the mid-1980s Ashton’s inaugural cigar brand launched. The titular brand, Ashton cigars were among the more expensive stogies in the American market. However this was no machine-made, mass-produced stogie. The Ashton was and still is considered a superb premium cigar.
The original Ashton cigar was made by Tabacos Dominicanos (Tabadom) with Henke Kelner at the helm. Kelner went on to fame creating the high-end Davidoff cigars. After a few years with Tabadom, Robert Levin felt a change was in order and contacted the Fuentes Cigar company.
Friends and Partners Committed to Excellence
Robert Levin, together with renowned cigar maker Carlos “Carlito” Fuente, Jr, create all the Ashton blends, practically from their inception. Robert’s partnership with Carlito grew out of a lifelong friendship. Their fathers were already friends so seeking Carlito’s input seemed only natural to his old buddy.
The Fuentes family, which began their Tampa, Florida-based cigar company in the 1920s, had plenty of knowledge regarding the growth of fine quality tobacco. They were the most logical source for Robert’s premium cigar reboot. And that was the secret sauce that saw Ashton really take off.
The small store in Philadelphia grew to include two more specialty stores as well as the Ashton Cigar Bar. In addition to the retail establishments Robert Levin formed Ashton Distributors, Inc. which sells cigars, cigar accessories and the prestigious Savoy line of humidors. The “family business” thrives.
