Spanish Cedar Trays Buying Guide
Using Spanish cedar cigar trays for storing your cigar inside your humidor is key. That way, you will not only maximize storage space and separate the different types of cigars you have, but you’ll also ensure that your cigars are placed in the most optimal condition possible (Spanish cedar also has moisture-regulating properties).
Is Spanish Cedar Good for a Humidor?
Solid Spanish cedar is widely considered the leading material for building cigar enclosures such as trays and dividers. And it’s easy to see why. One of the biggest benefits of using a Spanish cedar lined tray is that it can help with the humidity regulation inside your humidor (it’s a great addition if you’re already using humidity packs). This is crucial if you want your cigars to be stored in the most optimal condition at all times.
Spanish cedar is also insect-resistant. Due to the natural oils found within the wood, many cigar-loving insects will be deterred. And as a bonus, Spanish cedar also releases a mild and pleasant aroma, which can further enhance the flavor of your cigars.
Can Other Types of Wood Be Used as Humidor Trays?
If you can't go for a Spanish cedar tray or divider, there are a variety of other types of wood that can be used instead. Here, we’d like to mention that you can’t just use any wood (regardless of whether you’re using a traditional or an electric humidor), as some types of wood will negatively affect your cigars. If you can’t go for Spanish cedar, other suitable alternatives include:
- Mahogany: This type of wood is mostly used for trays and dividers. It’s stable and doesn’t warp easily, making it a suitable alternative to Spanish cedar. One key differentiator is that mahogany is scent-free. Okoume wood is a popular variant of mahogany used in humidors today.
- American red cedar: Though it’s not quite the same as Spanish cedar, American red cedar shares very similar properties with its Spanish counterpart. It’s a far less common choice, but it’s a suitable alternative if you happen to have access to it.
- Kiln-dried hardwoods: It’s not uncommon to find cigar humidors that use kiln-dried hardwoods such as cherry and oak. The main reason why these types of trees are suitable is because they are durable and considered low risk (in terms of imparting unwanted odors).
How to Choose Your Humidor Dividers
Just like when you choose your cigar cutter, lighter, and other accessories, there are several things that you need to consider when choosing your humidor dividers. Without being listed in order of importance, they include:
The material the humidor divider is made out of
- Whether you’re looking for a fixed or an adjustable divider or tray
- The number of dividers you need and in what size
- The overall aesthetic of the humidor tray (if you’re trying to achieve a particular look)
